Making the Most of Autumn Farmers' Markets

September 1, 2026

There's something deeply satisfying about filling a canvas bag with the last of the summer tomatoes, a bunch of kale, and a jar of local honey on a crisp September morning. Farmers' markets in coastal British Columbia reach their peak abundance this month, and making a habit of visiting them is one of the most enjoyable ways to eat well and connect with your community.

What to Look for in September

This is prime harvest season, which means incredible variety. Keep an eye out for:

  • Winter squash and pumpkins — butternut, acorn, and delicata are versatile, affordable, and store beautifully.
  • Apples and pears — local orchards begin their harvest runs this month. Ask vendors about their favourite varieties for eating versus baking.
  • Root vegetables — beets, carrots, and parsnips are hitting their stride and taste noticeably sweeter after cooler nights.
  • Corn — if you haven't had local corn yet this summer, September is your last chance. Don't miss it.
  • Late-season tomatoes — excellent for roasting, sauce-making, and freezing for winter.

Tips for Shopping Smarter

  • Arrive early for the best selection, but arrive near closing time if you're hoping for deals — vendors often discount what they'd rather not pack up.
  • Bring cash in small bills. Many vendors accept cards, but small denominations always make transactions smoother.
  • Ask questions. Farmers genuinely love talking about their growing practices. You'll often get storage tips, recipe ideas, and a better understanding of what you're buying.
  • Buy to preserve. September is an excellent time to make jams, roast and freeze squash, or put up tomato sauce. A few hours of effort now means a taste of summer in January.

Beyond the Produce

Don't overlook the non-food vendors. Local artisans, bakers, coffee roasters, and flower growers all call the market home. Buying from them supports small businesses and often means getting something genuinely made with care. Think of it as a leisurely walk with excellent shopping attached — one of autumn's simplest pleasures.
